What is xeriscaping?
Xeriscaping is a term coined in the early 1980’s by combining the words “xeros”, Greek for “dry”, and landscape. Although the word literally means “dry landscape,” the term xeriscape has come a long way in the last forty years. Xeriscaping is no longer exclusively choosing plants and landscape designs for reduced water use. Landscape designers are now looking at several facets that make up xeriscapes such as soil improvements, efficient irrigation techniques, choosing plants that thrive in tough climates like Colorado, proper use of mulch, choosing turf grass alternatives, and ways to reduce maintenance.
